Community Library

Kim and I got a trunk full of books in Portuguese so that we could start a reading program in our town.

We found some volunteers and trained them up in topics like: how to read out loud and how to wrangle criancas.

I missed the training because I was at the REDES slumberparty, so I'll have to guess at what's going on here:  This is clearly the part where they learned how to host an Educational Thunderdome.  Two Criancas go in....you know the rest

This is what my classrooms look like.  Only with 600x more children who are not paying attention.

When we got the books, we were going to write a grant to get some funds to build a library.  We stopped in the District Education office to say Hi and let them know what we were up to.

"Why don't you just go talk to the librarian?" the Chefe said.

What?  Apparently our town has a library...

We found the community library.  To get there, you have to walk past the market, through the main square, past where the pavement turns to gravel.  Keep on going.  Walk past some empty houses and then turn into what looks like a very large, very abandoned court yard.  At the end you'll find this.

Obviously, this is the community library!!

Niki is there for scale.

The library has some books.  Many more books than it has actual shelves for.

The librarian, Lurdes, is very nice and wants our help to build new shelves and to host story time for the local kids.  We'll be starting this weekend with my personal selection--Porcolino e Vovo (little piggy and his grandma).  I'm pretty excited.  I'll be headed out to the elementary school this week to round up some participants.  Stay tuned.
