I go to the market almost every day.  It’s about a 20 minute walk from my
house.  I go often for two reasons.  1)  To
get out of the house and 2) because food goes bad so quickly here that I can’t
keep vegetables for more than a day or two, and all I eat is: vegetables, eggs,
beans, and rice.  And mayonnaise.
Here’s what I brought back today:
1 cabbage
6 tomatoes
1 green pepper
5 potatoes
4 onions
6 eggs
½ kilo rice
½ kilo beans
1 package of soup mix
1 can of tuna
2 loaves of bread

fried dough balls and 10 fried bean patties that I ate on the way home)
I got all this stuff for 195 mts.  That’s about $6.50 and it should keep me alive for a couple days.  Part of the reason I’m able to get so many vegetables for such a low, low price is because I have a vegetable lady.  Her name is Odet and I’m a fiercely loyal to her.  I asked her for a cabbage, 4 potatoes and 3 onions.  The rest was bonus that she just threw in because for some reason she likes to give me free stuff.  Ok, I’ll take it.

I am so jealous of your shopping! I love being able to shop at the supermarket in Tete city, don't get me wrong, but your diet certainly takes a hit when you can only shop once every one or two weeks -- and you have to carry everything home in a chapa! I wish my town had a market.
